04/16/03:
Sal is home once again after a surgical procedure at the hospital. Sal is doing
well and we wish only for a safe, effective recovery. I'll post news here as it
occurs.
01/26/03: Sal is home once again after a short visit at the
hospital. A nearby building fire had aggravated Sal's respiratory system and led him
to seek medical attention. After some tests, it was found that Sal had suffered a
minor heart attack and he is currently evaluating his options.
Sal is in good spirits and is glad to be home, but is not 100 % just yet. While
it may be tempting to want to call him, please be mindful that he requires an easy and
relaxed scheduled just now so please try to respect that.
If you wish to relay a message to Sal, please e-mail
it to me and I will see it is forwarded to him as soon as is feasible. I will
certainly try to post updates in this space as they are available in the future.
Thank you for your concern and good wishes.
On Thursday, January 23, 2003, The Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University,
Newark, NJ Campus, will celebrate the music of Sal Mosca in a
round-table discussion. The round-table event will be hosted by Dan Morganstern and
Vincent Pelote. The program will be led by Don Messina, Jimmy Halperin, and Bill Chattin.
The Jimmy Halperin Trio (tenor sax, bass, and drums) will perform a few of Sal's
compositions (spotlighting Sal as a composer), and present to the audience one hour
of selected, excerpted solos of Sal's playing as a sideman, a soloist, an arranger, a
composer, and the special music he created with Warne Marsh. The discussion gets under way
at 7 PM and concludes no later than 9:30 PM. Admission is free.
For more information contact Don Messina at bmctrio@concentric.net
or call Vincent Pelote at the Institute of Jazz Studies (973-353-5595).

Sal's newest CD, Sal Mosca in Antwerp,
has been pressed and is available now from Zinnia records.
It is a live, solo piano performance given in Antwerp on November 12, 1992 and is a new
sound from Sal, in my opinion. It is more open, accessible, relaxed and as good as
it gets. Great takes on some standards plus some new tunes, all originals as
interpreted by Sal during this wonderful performance.

On April 27, 2002 Sal Mosca turned 75 years of age, 50 of those years dedicated to his
playing and to the teaching of creation to others. Sal's family organized a small
gathering of music related acquaintances to meet at his studio in Mt. Vernon to celebrate
Sal's birthday, his return to health, his return to creative musical endeavors and his
passion for excellence. This website is proud to have enabled the communication over
the past few years between people who may have otherwise remained apart. It has also
been my pleasure and good fortune to get to know some of Sal's friends myself.
The party was a success, with about 30-40 people showing up to hear Sal, Jim Halperin
and Don Messina finishing up an early afternoon session before the socializing began.
Children played, music was created and enjoyed, and friendships were renewed.
Some dear friends were sorely missed (Key of Dee) but Sal
thoroughly enjoyed the occasion and was touched by the show of friendship and the memories
shared.
We would like to thank each of you for coming and for being such good people to know.
